It’s Okay If You’re Not Ready To Do An Overhaul: Little Things Make a BIG Difference

I hear from clients and friends alike that they just aren’t ready to commit to a diet or changing their lifestyle too much right now. There’s a pandemic happening; We’ve got a very serious fight for justice going on right now, and that’s on top of all of the things we are dealing with in our personal lives. On top of all of that, maybe you’re working from home, and you hate it. Maybe you stopped working out because your gym closed and you just don’t have the motivation to workout alone. 

I’m here to tell you this: it’s okay that you’re not ready. How can I say this with confidence? I can say this because we both know the amount of new stressors you might be undergoing right now are, well, stressful. And hey, let’s be honest, whatever it is that you want to fix as it relates to your health and wellness didn’t “break” overnight. So, why would you expect that you could fix it all today? 

In fact, dare I say that fixing whatever it is you want to fix slowly may even yield stronger, long-lasting results rather than a quick fix. For instance, if you want to lose weight, I don’t suggest extreme calorie deficits. They are hard to maintain, and, if you’re already a bit stressed, it won’t help.  The CDC recommends a gradual weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week (Ma, 2018). There’s a reason for a slow and steady approach; you don’t need to overhaul your life today. On average, it takes more than two months for a habit to stick; according to one source, it takes 66 days (How Long Does It Take, 2020).

So, let’s be real–if you’re not ready, you’re not ready. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make tiny changes to help you in the long run. For instance, here is a brief list of steps you can take to improve your health today without an overhaul:

  • Drink more water. Being dehydrated yields negative effects, especially when it comes to weight loss, so drink up!
  • Become active. Walk for 30 minutes.
  • Pay attention to what you eat. Just be cognizant of your choices. 
  • Don’t eat in front of the TV.
  • Eat slowly.

I know you know the old adage, slow and steady wins the race. Changing gradually allows you to focus on how you can build lifelong habits that will keep you from the rollercoaster ride you might be currently on. My favorite outcome is consistency. The more consistent you can become, the more successful you will be.

So, no need for an overhaul today. Try making a small change here or there. You might find that it blossoms into the change you weren’t ready to make to begin with.
